The mild winters also mean some subtropical species can survive outdoors with minimal protection. Pomegranate, olive, and certain fig varieties handle Zone 7 winters if placed in a sheltered spot. Your growing season stretches seven months or more, giving trees a long runway for development.

Summer heat can be the bigger challenge in Zone 7 — many areas in this zone see consistent 90°F+ days. Japanese maples and other thin-leaved species benefit from afternoon shade during July and August. Watering frequency increases significantly in summer, sometimes requiring twice-daily checks for trees in small pots.
