  5. Zone 10

USDA Zone 10

30°F to 40°F25 species

Zone 10 is tropical bonsai territory. Winter lows barely touch 30°F, so frost is rare and brief. This is where ficus, jade, bougainvillea, Brazilian rain tree, and other tropical species grow outdoors without a second thought. Year-round growth means faster development and more frequent styling opportunities.

The downside: most temperate species won't get the winter dormancy they need. Japanese maples, larch, and pines are essentially off the table unless you have refrigerated cold storage (some dedicated growers in South Florida do this, but it's a lot of work). Stick to tropicals and subtropicals and you'll have an incredible selection.

Heat and humidity are your main management challenges. Water daily in summer — sometimes twice for smaller pots. Fungal diseases love these conditions, so keep foliage dry when possible and ensure good airflow. On the bright side, you can work on your trees year-round, which means faster skill development too.

Growing on a windowsill instead? USDA zones describe outdoor winter lows, so they don't apply to you — any indoor-tolerant species works in every zone.
