USDA Zone 4

-30°F to -20°F8 species

Zone 4 opens up a few more options than Zone 3, though winter is still the main event. Temperatures dip to -30°F, which means you're still working with genuinely cold-hardy species. The good news: most classic temperate bonsai handle this range with proper winter care.

You get a solid five-month growing season from late April through October. Deciduous species like beech, hornbeam, and larch put on excellent fall color, and the long cold winter gives them the deep dormancy they need to thrive.

Root protection remains critical. Use a cold frame, bury pots in the ground up to the rim, or overwinter in an unheated shed or garage that stays between 20-35°F. The goal is to prevent the root ball from cycling through hard freeze-thaw-freeze, which cracks pots and shreds fine roots.

Growing on a windowsill instead? USDA zones describe outdoor winter lows, so they don't apply to you — any indoor-tolerant species works in every zone.
