USDA Zone 8

Zone 8 is warm enough to grow most temperate species and cool enough to still provide winter dormancy — the best of both worlds. Winter lows reach 10°F, which rules out the most cold-sensitive tropicals outdoors but opens the door to pomegranate, olive, crape myrtle, and even some borderline tropical species.

Many bonsai growers in Zone 8 can keep trees outdoors year-round with minimal protection. A quick freeze cloth over tender species on the coldest nights is usually enough. The long growing season — often eight months — means your trees develop faster than in colder zones.

The trade-off is summer heat. Zone 8 summers can be brutal, especially in the South. Watering becomes a twice-daily task for small pots. Afternoon shade helps heat-sensitive species like Japanese maple and azalea. Humidity in southern Zone 8 areas promotes fungal issues, so good air circulation around your trees matters.
