Zone 5 is where bonsai growing gets genuinely exciting. Winters hit -20°F, which is cold but manageable for a wide range of species. This is the sweet spot where most temperate bonsai thrive — you get real seasons without the extreme punishment of zones 3-4.
Japanese maples start to become viable here with winter protection, and the full range of junipers, pines, elms, and deciduous trees are on the table. The growing season runs roughly six months, giving your trees enough time to develop strong growth and heal from styling work.
Winter care is still important but less stressful than colder zones. A cold frame or unheated garage handles most species. Japanese maples and trident maples benefit from extra protection since their fine ramification is vulnerable to desiccating winter winds.
Growing on a windowsill instead? USDA zones describe outdoor winter lows, so they don't apply to you — any indoor-tolerant species works in every zone.
