USDA Zone 11

Zone 11 is as warm as it gets in the US — think southern Florida, Hawaii, and parts of coastal California. Winter lows stay above 40°F, so frost is virtually nonexistent. Every tropical bonsai species thrives here, and many grow aggressively year-round.

Temperate species are off the table. No maples, no larch, no pine — they need cold dormancy that Zone 11 simply can't provide. But the tropical selection more than makes up for it. Ficus develops aerial roots naturally in the humidity. Brazilian rain tree puts out compound leaves that close at night. Bougainvillea blooms almost continuously.

Your biggest challenge is managing growth, not encouraging it. Tropical species in Zone 11 can grow so fast that they need pruning every few weeks to maintain shape. Pests are active year-round, so regular inspection is part of the routine. Water management matters most — these trees drink heavily in heat, and standing water combined with warmth breeds root rot fast.
