How to build it
Select material with an existing lean or a young, flexible trunk you can wire into position. Trees that grew toward a light source naturally suit this style — they've already started the story you're telling. Slight curves in the trunk add character; a perfectly straight angled trunk works too but reads differently.
Angle the tree in its pot so the trunk hits your target lean — somewhere between 60 and 80 degrees from horizontal. Secure it with wire through the drainage holes. Some growers establish the angle from the first potting; others adjust gradually during repotting sessions over two or three years, which is gentler on the root system.
Develop the roots to support the visual narrative. During repotting, keep more root mass on the side opposite the lean. Over time, gradually expose these anchor roots to build visible nebari that explains the physics of the design. The viewer should look at the roots and intuitively understand why the tree hasn't toppled.
Branch placement follows informal upright principles, but shift the weight opposite the lean. The first major branch extends away from the lean direction at roughly one-third up the trunk. Build a fuller canopy on the counterbalance side. The result should look stable and settled — a tree that found its angle decades ago and grew into it, not something about to tip over.
