Slanting

Shakan

The slanting style captures a tree that's been pushed sideways — by decades of prevailing wind, by reaching toward light at a forest edge, or by growing on a hillside. The trunk angles between 60 and 80 degrees from vertical. Enough to look intentional. Not so far it becomes a cascade.

Walk through any forest margin and you'll see trees like this — permanently leaning toward open sky. Slanting bonsai bottle that sense of environmental pressure and constant motion. The off-center weight distribution creates a dynamic tension that upright styles simply can't deliver.

This style is criminally underappreciated. It gets passed over for flashier designs, but a well-executed shakan has a quiet drama to it. The tree looks like it's been leaning into the wind for fifty years and has no plans to straighten up. That stubbornness is what makes it compelling.

Starting out?

Slanting is one of the friendliest styles for a first styling project — it's mostly one decision (the angle) plus patience, and repotting the tree at a tilt does half the work for you. A cotoneaster from a garden center costs under $15 and develops trunk angles almost on its own. Keep the lean between 60 and 80 degrees and let the surface roots catch up over a couple of seasons.

The anatomy

What makes a slanting read as one — judge any tree against these rules.

Angle
The trunk leans at a consistent angle, typically 60-80 degrees from the soil surface.
Trunk
Taper still matters: thick at the base, narrowing upward, same as any other style. The lean is the defining feature, but without taper the tree looks like a stick wedged at an angle.
Nebari
Asymmetric root spread sells the illusion. Roots on the anchor side — opposite the lean — should be strong, visible, and appear to grip the soil against the force pushing the tree sideways; roots on the leaning side can be less prominent or partially exposed. These roots are what kept the tree from falling over for decades.
Branches
Standard alternating pattern with one key difference: the first and heaviest branch usually extends opposite the lean, acting as a visual counterweight. Upper branches may follow the lean slightly.
Canopy
Asymmetrical but balanced, heavier on the side opposite the trunk's lean. The composition should feel stable — like the tree found its equilibrium long ago and has no intention of moving.

How to build it

    Select material with an existing lean or a young, flexible trunk you can wire into position. Trees that grew toward a light source naturally suit this style — they've already started the story you're telling. Slight curves in the trunk add character; a perfectly straight angled trunk works too but reads differently.

    Angle the tree in its pot so the trunk hits your target lean — somewhere between 60 and 80 degrees from horizontal. Secure it with wire through the drainage holes. Some growers establish the angle from the first potting; others adjust gradually during repotting sessions over two or three years, which is gentler on the root system.

    Develop the roots to support the visual narrative. During repotting, keep more root mass on the side opposite the lean. Over time, gradually expose these anchor roots to build visible nebari that explains the physics of the design. The viewer should look at the roots and intuitively understand why the tree hasn't toppled.

    Branch placement follows informal upright principles, but shift the weight opposite the lean. The first major branch extends away from the lean direction at roughly one-third up the trunk. Build a fuller canopy on the counterbalance side. The result should look stable and settled — a tree that found its angle decades ago and grew into it, not something about to tip over.
