How to use this result

The quantities are loose, dry volume — what you'd scoop, not what you'd pack down. Buy the next bag size up from each number. Leftover mix keeps for years in a dry bucket, and you'll use it: repotting comes back around every two or three springs.

Mix the components dry in a tub, then sift the whole batch over window screen. That step matters more than the ratio — fines settle between particles and turn a fast-draining mix into pudding.

If the numbers look small, they are. A 10 × 7 × 2.5-inch pot holds about two dry quarts. Shallow pots are the whole point.

No black box

How the calculator works

Every rule this tool applies, in the open:

  • Pot volume: length × width × depth × 0.75 — or π × radius² × depth × 0.75 for round pots. The 0.75 is a fill factor: root mass plus the watering gap under the rim.
  • Routing: the calculator reads your species' soil line from the same database row that renders its species page, so the mix can't contradict the care sheet. A soil line built on “moisture-retentive” routes to the wet-lover recipe; “fast-draining,” “lean,” or “gritty” routes to the lean recipe; succulents always go pumice-heavy. Only when the soil line doesn't decide does the tree's type — conifer, deciduous, tropical — pick the mix.
  • Seven recipes: conifers get 1:1:1 akadama/pumice/lava, because junipers and pines want air over water. Deciduous trees get 50/25/25, because maples and elms drink hard in leaf. Tropical and indoor trees get 40/30/30, because a ficus on a windowsill lives in steadier conditions than a pine on a bench. Wet-lovers — bald cypress, larch, willow, wisteria — get 50/25/25, because a swamp tree likes its feet damp. Succulents — jade, dwarf jade, desert rose — get 25/50/25, because the plant stores its own water and the pot shouldn't. Lean species — bougainvillea, olive, rosemary, the pines — get 1:1:1, because rich, water-holding mixes rot them. Everything else — crabapple, pomegranate, podocarpus — gets 40/30/30, the dry side of middle. Azaleas get no blend at all: straight kanuma.
  • Climate: hot-dry shifts 10% from lava into akadama for water retention; humid does the reverse for drainage. Succulents skip the shift — a jade in Phoenix needs more drainage, not more stored water.
  • Quantities: cubic inches × 0.01488 = US dry quarts, the unit soil bags are sold in. A dry quart is 67.2 cubic inches — about 16% bigger than the liquid quart on your measuring cup, so don't measure the result with one.
  • Budget mode: swaps akadama for Turface-style calcined clay and says the tradeoff out loud. NAPA 8822 is a different material with the opposite tradeoff — the FAQ below covers both.
  • Rounding: up, to the nearest quarter quart — bags don't come in decimals.

None of this is proprietary. These are the ratios growers have argued about for decades, and the disagreements all live within ±10%. What actually matters is that every particle drains fast and holds a little water — get that right and the exact split is taste.

The calculator gives you quarts; bags are sold in liters and vague “small/large.” Here's the translation, with honest price ranges as of this writing — prices drift, ratios don't.

Particle size, by pot

Particle size sets the air-to-water balance as much as the recipe does. Sift dry soil through kitchen or bonsai sieves and keep the band that matches your pot; the dust that falls through the finest screen goes to the garden, never the bonsai pot.
