After the math
Cut a length about one and a half times the branch, anchor it two turns back on the trunk or a parent branch, and wrap at roughly 45 degrees — snug to the bark, never strangling it. Then bend slowly, with both hands, supporting the branch from outside the curve.
The test of the gauge is the bend itself: if the branch springs back, the wire is too thin — size up or add a second wire alongside the first. If you're denting bark just by wrapping, it's too thick. One gauge can wire two branches of similar thickness, which is the tidiest way to anchor both.

No black box

Our take on metal: start with aluminum. It's cheaper, forgiving to apply, and kind to thin bark — copper earns its place once you're styling junipers and pines seriously.

Before you buy
Bonsai wire sells by weight, not length — and the length difference between materials surprises people. Thick copper rolls are short: 100 g of 4 mm copper is under a meter of wire.

No black box here either: length = 100 g ÷ (density × cross-section). Aluminum runs 2.70 g/cm³, copper 8.96 g/cm³ — that 3.3× density gap is the whole table. A practical starter kit is 100 g each of 1.5, 2, and 3 mm aluminum; buy copper by the job, not the shelf.
Timing
Deciduous (maple, elm, hornbeam)
Late winter before buds move, or early summer once new leaves harden. Branches thicken fast in spring — check wire every 3–4 weeks or it bites.
Junipers & most conifers
Late fall through winter is the classic window: growth is slow, so the wire stays put longer. Expect 6–12 months to set.
Pines
Fall and winter, after the year's candle work is done. Winter-wired pines set over the following season.
Indoor tropicals (ficus, jade)
Any month — indoor growth doesn't pause. Fast growers like ficus swallow wire in 6–8 weeks, so check early and often.
Growers argue about the edges of every window — the part nobody argues about is checking monthly once the wire is on.
