For a desk under office lighting, get a Hawaiian umbrella; it stays small, tolerates the dimmest light of any tree we list, and shrugs off a long weekend dry. If your desk sits beside a window, a dwarf jade is the tougher choice, and a money tree is the one that comes closest to liking fluorescent light.
An office is a hard room for a plant. Overhead lighting runs 30-50 foot-candles at desk height, a fraction of what a window delivers. HVAC drops humidity into the 20s and pushes dry air across the pot all day. Nobody waters from Friday afternoon to Tuesday morning, and nobody waters over the holidays. The species here were picked for those three problems in that order, with a mature size under two feet so the tree fits beside a monitor.
What doesn't belong on a desk: the juniper the gift shop sold as a desk tree, which needs full sun and a real winter and will be dead indoors by spring; a Norfolk Island pine, which loses lower branches for good after one dry weekend; and fukien tea or serissa, which drop leaves the first time the air conditioning kicks on.
Schefflera arboricola 'Luseane'
Eight to sixteen inches at maturity, small leaves that read as a tree at desk scale, and a tolerance for east-window light that stretches to a bright desk lamp. It wants water every 3-4 days in warm months and 5-7 in winter, so a Friday-to-Tuesday gap is inside its range. Keep it above 55°F and out of the vent's airflow.
Pachira aquatica
The one species whose care sheet says it grows under fluorescent or LED office lighting, not just survives it. The braided trunk stores water: once or twice a week in summer, every 10-14 days in winter, so a week away costs nothing. It runs 10-24 inches, larger than the others here, so give it a corner of the desk, not a shelf.
Portulacaria afra
Water every 5-7 days in summer and every 2-3 weeks in winter, and it prefers dry office air to humid air. That makes it the best desk tree for people who travel. The catch is light: it needs a south window or a real grow bulb, and under ceiling lights alone it stretches quickly into long gaps between leaves.
Ficus microcarpa
Ficus microcarpa is the desk tree that looks most like a bonsai, with a thick trunk and aerial roots at eight to twenty inches. It tolerates lower light than most tropicals and slight underwatering, on a once-a-week rhythm in a dim office. Its weakness is drafts: a desk under an AC vent means leaf drop, so pick the spot before the tree.
Schefflera arboricola
Bigger-leaved sibling of the Hawaiian umbrella, and the more forgiving of the two when the desk is far from a window: it survives medium light with slower growth. Water once a week in low light. The leaves droop when it's dry and recover within a day of watering, which makes it an honest tree for someone still learning to read soil.
Podocarpus macrophyllus
Slow growth means it holds a shape for months without pruning, which suits a tree you glance at more than tend. It takes bright indirect light from a nearby window and drinks every 4-5 days in winter, 2-3 in summer. It needs no dormancy, so it never has to leave the building. Under ceiling lights alone, though, it thins.
Crassula ovata
For a desk at a sunny window, jade goes longer between waterings than anything here: 7-10 days in summer, 2-3 weeks in winter, and it likes the dry air. It wants 4-6 hours of direct sun, which rules out interior desks. Keep it above 50°F, and tell whoever waters the office plants to skip it; overwatering kills jade faster than neglect.
Start with where the desk is. Within three feet of a window: dwarf jade or jade if the window faces south, ficus or podocarpus otherwise. Interior desk under ceiling lights: Hawaiian umbrella, schefflera, or money tree, and plan on a clip-on LED grow bulb in the desk lamp, because 30-50 foot-candles keeps those three alive without letting them grow.
Then be honest about absences. Every pick here handles a three-day weekend if you water before you leave. For a two-week vacation, only dwarf jade, jade, and money tree survive on the water you leave behind; the rest need a colleague with instructions, and the instructions should be to check the soil with a finger, not to water on a schedule. Soak the pot well the day you leave and move it a foot back from any window so it dries slower.
Two things to skip. Don't buy a tree for a desk under an air vent; move desks or move the tree, because cold dry air across a ficus or a schefflera means bare branches by February. And don't buy for a windowless office with no lamp budget. A grow bulb costs less than a replacement tree, and without one you're buying a slow death.
